Wearability Assessment of a Mobile Augmented Reality System

Wearable computers place loads on the human body. Previous studies on load carriage have found that wearing backpacks and head mounted loads can result in physiological, biomechanical and comfort effects. This paper establishes a methodology for assessing these effects in a series of tests for determining the wearability of a prototype mobile augmented reality system. The outcome of the results suggest that further improvements to the prototype system need to be taken into consideration in further design, reinforcing the need for an iterative design lifecycle, while establishing an important framework for assessing effects that relate to issues of health and safety of wearable devices.
